Reiki, intuited by Dr Usui, is a very gentle form of energy work that has been known to support emotional and physical wellness. Reiki means, "Life force energy." This life force energy flows through all of us and is what allows life. When one's life force energy is low, one is more susceptible to getting sick, or feeling stressed. When one's life force energy is high, one is more capable of experiencing joy and health.
During a Reiki treatment the therapist's hands are placed just off, or lightly touching (client's choice), the fully clothed body. Energy flows where it is needed and may be experienced as slight warmth or tingling. At times Reiki is also offered long distance.
Reiki is meant to be a complementary modality to support other treatment. The intention is to promote health and wellness, enhance relaxation, reduce pain, promote comfort with your own thoughts, promote letting go of tensions and apprehensions caused by stress, emotional barriers and physical /mental illnesses and offer a positive experience utilizing the concept of mind, body, and soul.
Because there is no belief system attached to Reiki, it is accessible to everyone.
Reiki is a non-invasive technique with little to no side effects. During a Reiki session one may feel a slight change in temperature or tingling/minor discomfort where the practitioner's hands have been placed/hovered over.
While Reiki does not cure disease and is not intended to be the primary treatment for any health problem, it is an accepted and credited massage modality.
Reiki has been and, and may still be, used at John Hopkins Integrated Medicine Center.
